Horror and terror are both facets of an experience of intense and overwhelming fear. But where terror is inflected with dread and anticipation, horror is inflected with disgust and revulsion. Terror precedes the event and horror follows it. Alfred Hitchcock, for instance, deals mainly in terror. Clive Barker trades in horror. But while his themes have stayed consistent, his media have varied, beginning in live theatre and proceeding through fiction before finally arriving in film — Hellraiser was his directorial debut, a role he took on out of disappointment in the way other directors treated his material. It wasn’t horrific enough.
And what material it is. Hellraiser opens with an awful guy named Frank Cotton buying a puzzle box, opening it, and almost immediately being torn to shreds by otherworldly hooks and barbs. Turns out the box is a portal to a dimension of hellish and incomprehensibly intense experiences, both pain and pleasure. The box — and Frank’s seemingly abandoned house — end up in the hands of Frank’s brother Larry and Larry’s wife Julia, who has her own prurient and sadistic interests to satisfy. But Frank’s not willing to give up the box quite yet, and the entities that have claimed Frank aren’t willing to part with him either. See what we mean? Hellraiser isn’t interested in suspense; it simply wants to show you something.
