About this Event
Join us for Hello for Good's Spring Symposium, featuring Judge Steven Leifman, in Gonzaga University's Hemmingson Ballroom on Friday May 16th. This breakfast program will focus on how Spokane can model after Judge Leifman's pioneering work to provide more effective services to individuals with mental illnesses within the criminal justice system.
Judge Steven Leifman is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking reforms in how the criminal justice system addresses mental health issues. His efforts have significantly improved the treatment and outcomes for individuals with mental illnesses who come into contact with the justice system. Notably, Judge Leifman has been honored by Pope Francis for his contributions.
Judge Leifman's career began 48 years ago, coinciding with the de-institutionalization of individuals with mental illnesses. His early experience as a 17-year-old legislative intern investigating a complaint about a constituent's treatment in institutional care marked the start of his lifelong commitment to mental health reform. He co-founded the Miami-Dade Criminal Mental Health Project, which revealed that individuals with mental illnesses spend four to eight times longer incarcerated than those without mental illnesses for the same charges, at a significantly higher cost. The project has implemented innovative training programs for law enforcement and diversion initiatives that have dramatically reduced recidivism and police shootings.
In 2015, Judge Leifman received the prestigious William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence, presented by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. This award recognizes state court judges who exemplify judicial excellence, integrity, fairness, and professional ethics. Judge Leifman is also the inaugural recipient of the Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Award for Judicial Excellence, underscoring his significant impact on the legal and mental health communities.
Judge Leifman's approach involves a comprehensive strategy that includes training law enforcement officers to recognize and respond appropriately to signs of mental illnesses, reducing unnecessary arrests and improving outcomes. His post-arrest diversion initiatives aim to divert individuals with mental illnesses from J*il to treatment centers, expediting their release and providing necessary care, leading to a substantial reduction in recidivism rates.
This symposium is a unique opportunity to learn from Judge Leifman's vast experience and success in transforming mental health services within the criminal justice system and how his work may positively impact the region.
