About this Event
In this training, you will learn what a family's property tax responsibility is and is not, what laws oversee distribution of a deceased family member's assets and a framework for managing a family member's affairs. Participants will obtain resources on strategies and interventions on pathways for wealth preservation and community economic development. In addition, you will learn how property taxes work, what happens when taxes go unpaid, and how to avoid tax sale. We will explain probate (the court process that decides who gets what when someone dies) and power of attorney (who can make decisions for you if you can’t) in everyday language. We will also name common ways families lose property during gentrification and speculation and how to spot scams and red flags. You will create a property-tax calendar and a checklist for a Family Legacy Folder to keep key documents in one place.
