Calling all Heated Rivalry fans! Join the Morrill Memorial Library for this fun and informative talk between Prof. Masha Raskolnikov and Cashman Kerr Prince, on Monday, June 8 at 6:30 pm, just in time for Pride Month! This event will be a hybrid format, so you can choose to attend in-person in the library's Simoni Room or join virtually via Zoom.
Who’s Ilya? Shane? Why are we talking about fictional gay hockey players?
Join us for a discussion of Heated Rivalry - the book series and the show. We’ll talk about what’s going on in this fictional universe and what our cultural obsession with it says about our universe today. There will be spoilers but hopefully our commentary will make them worthwhile. Come prepared for a fun and lively - maybe even scrappy! - discussion.
About our speakers: Norwood resident Cashman Kerr Prince can be found knitting through Town Meeting, involved with the Norwood Historical Society (where he currently serves as President), or walking his dog around town. While his cultural criticism usually focuses on music, he is excited to have this opportunity to talk about literature, popular culture, and arts more broadly to the library audience!
Masha Raskolnikov is not a Norwood Resident but is a fan of Norwood. She lives in Ithaca, NY, where she teaches English literature, including queer and trans fiction, at Cornell University. Like Cashman, she is often to be seen walking her dog around town. Like Ilya in Heated Rivalry, she hails from Russia and like Shane from Heated Rivalry, she is Canadian. Lately, she's been doing research and teaching about how books and media deemed "escapist" or "a waste of time" actually help us to survive.
