Initially slated as a sixteen-week shoot, the making of Apocalypse Now (1979) would grow to mirror the film itself, and produce a million feet of film stock in the process. As Coppola himself put it, “We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane.” Much more than a footnote to the rightly praised Apocalypse Now, Hearts Of Darkness captures a unique insight into the creative process of one of cinema’s most revered directors, at the height of his powers, navigating the fine line between art and commerce without sacrificing himself or his dignity.
