Health Literacy Fundamentals for Health Care Professionals - Oct 18 Session

Description: Health literacy describes the knowledge and skills associated with finding, understanding, and using information to improve personal health and navigate health systems. This educational activity is designed to provide health care professionals with knowledge and skills they can use to contribute to and promote health literacy.

Objectives:

1. Define literacy and health literacy and cite link between health literacy and health outcomes.

2. Discuss how the complexity of information and health systems influence health literacy.

3. Recognize literacy demands in health and health care among the patients and communities for whom they provide care and services.

4. Identify the role of organizational health literacy in meeting the needs of patients and communities.

5. Define plain language and demonstrate the application of plain language skills in verbal and written communication.

6. Understand how to use readability formula tools to evaluate text in patient- and public-facing communication.

7. Articulate how utilizing learned strategies to promote personal and organizational health literacy can contribute to the advancement of health equity.

8. Describe 3 ways this educational activity can be applied to their professional practice.
