We bring you two novelists finding inspiration from our recent history. Dominic Hoey’s coming-of-age novel 1985 is an adventure story packed with local colour, family poverty and dysfunction, which has been described as “writing of raw and shining brilliance”. Rising star Airana Ngarewa’s new book, The Last Living Cannibal takes us back to 1940s Taranaki and is said to be “the epitome of a classic Aotearoa novel”. They chat to Louise Ward about where they find their stories.
