About this Event

So, how do you pronounce H-A-Y-T-I ? What are the Hayti Neighborhood's connections to the island of Haiti? ...to Black Wall St.? ...to the city of Durham at large? These questions are answered while many more are raised in this 75-minute tour of Fayetteville St., the commercial center of Durham’s largest African American residential neighborhood. Stops include the neighborhood’s founding institutions: St. Joseph’s AME church, The Carolina Times, Stanford L. Warren Library and more! Stories include: Women of Hayti, Power of Black Churches and Urban Renewal. The tour begins and ends at the Hayti Heritage Center.

Is this a free event?

No. Tickets cost between $20 - $25 depending on availability. Children are free.


Why does Whistle Stop Tours charge for their tours?

Revenue from ticket sales support non-profit partners like St. Joseph's Foundation Inc. Hayti Heritage Center as well as to support local performing artists commited to neighborhood preservation and learning through the arts.


What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is a parking lot in front of the Hayti, as well as on-street parking alongside the building and around back. Additional parking can be found on Old Fayetteville St. at the Carolina Times gravel lot.


What time should I arrive?

Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the start time.


What can I bring into the event?

Water, walking shoes, umbrella, camera, or cell phone. Pictures only, no video.


What if it rains?

All stops on the tour are weather dependent. Tours will continue in light rain at temperatures 60 degrees and above. Cancellations notices will be sent to registered participants by 8:30 am on the day of the tour.

What's the refund policy?

We do not refund tickets. If buyer is unable to attend the tour he/she/they registered for, tickets may be used towards a future tour. Buyer must contact the organizer by email 24 hrs prior to the start of the tour to make arrangements.


Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No. You must sign-in upon arrival.


Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes.
