Join us at CombatCon 2024 in Las Vegas for an event that may truly be the first of its kind.Five Circles Martial Arts and Akado Armory will be hosting a Hayanuki Gekiken Taikai (Quick-Draw Fencing Tournament). For what may be the first time ever, practitioners of Battojutsu and Iaido will face off and test their quick-draw sword skill using steel fencing katana provided by Akado Armory.
This event is open to all practitioners, all styles, all experience levels. Even our HEMA sisters and brothers in arms can get in on the action. (We'll be hosting a class beforehand to help any newbies learn the necessary skills). But, for this first event, we have limited time and limited space, so we will only be allowing 20 competitors to register.
This competitive event will be focused on providing a sparring context for using Japanese battojutsu (sword drawing) techniques. Participants will face off in close quarters. Once signaled they will draw their swords as quickly as possible and attempt to score a touch on their opponent while avoiding being touched in return. The event will run competitors through a round robin of matches. Matches are made up of three passes. In each pass competitors will be able to earn points for a clean (unanswered) touch.
Competitors stand in range and at the ready. Once signaled they will only be allowed to score in a first intention strike or counterstrike. If no touch is made in the first moment, competitors will not continue to fence and will be reset for the next pass. Each pass scored as follows:
Double or Miss: 0 points;
Limb Touch: 1 point; and
Head or Torso Touch: 3 points.
This will yield a maximum potential match score of 9 points. Once all pool matches are completed, the top four point-scorers will be seeded into a semi-final match. Semi-final and final matches will be first to three points.
All swords for the event will be provided by Akado Armory. The event swords will be given away as prizes to the top finishers after the event.
Competitors will need to have their own protective gear. Including:
- Fencing mask with occipital coverage
- Throat protector
- Fencing jacket (marked as rate 350N or better)
- Elbow protectors
- Medium or better gloves (Red Dragon, lacrosse, etc.)
- Groin protector (required for fencers with external organs,
suggested for all)
- Knee protectors
