This screening is part of the Havel 90 Festival Film Marathon, a three-day exploration of Havel’s relationship with cinema within a four-day celebration of his life, art, and legacy.

Before he became president, Václav Havel was a celebrated playwright, a reluctant dissident, and a deeply imperfect man navigating love, ambition, fear, and responsibility. Slávek Horák’s biographical drama follows him from the Soviet-led invasion of 1968 through Charter 77, political persecution and imprisonment, and the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

Rather than offering a conventional portrait of a statesman, Havel focuses on the private choices behind the public figure. At its center is his complex marriage to Olga, whose honesty and resilience ground him as political pressure and personal contradictions intensify.

Viktor Dvořák portrays Havel with vulnerability, humor, and restless energy. Stylized theatrical sequences blur the boundaries between stage, memory, and history, presenting the future president first and foremost as a writer and human being learning to accept the consequences of his convictions.

Havel 90 Festival is organized by the Czech Center New York and the Vaclav Havel Center, with support from the Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association.
