Harvest Your Creativity Workshop: Ethical Storytelling

Join Anna Ghublikian and Davey Thatcher, founders of Emergent Media Collective (EMC), for a workshop on ethical, participant-centered documentary production. Participants will view a short film from an HIV anti-stigma campaign, highlighting responsible storytelling practices.

Traditional documentaries often harm marginalized communities through lack of representation, tokenization, exploitation, and misrepresentation. EMC tackles these issues through innovative methods, creating content that elevates marginalized voices while ensuring subject safety. The workshop will explore ethical storytelling, centering marginalized voices, building trust with subjects, trauma-informed approaches, and measuring impact beyond engagement metrics. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge for producing ethical, impactful documentaries that challenge traditional power imbalances in media.

Anna Ghublikian (they/them) is a queer artist, curator, and organizer based on the occupied territory of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and úu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute). They worked for 7 years as a producer, creating instructional and educational, documentary, interview-style, and conceptual videos.

Davey Thatcher (they/them) is an award winning queer filmmaker exploring the expansive gender universe one day at a time. They have worked both producing, filming and editing a wide range of content from TV shows, to documentaries to interactive web content. They’re deeply curious about how to continuously bring anti-oppression frameworks into media production through participatory and collective processes.
