Hartmut Haenchen conducts Bruckner's Sixth

Hartmut Haenchen concludes his special series of Bruckner's middle three symphonies with this concert. Haenchen's interpretations of Bruckner have received rave reviews. For instance, NRC called Haenchen's Bruckner 'intoxicatingly beautiful'. Bruckner's Sixth is contemplative, almost philosophical in nature, and is regarded as an ode to his predecessor Wagner.

Mahler's Songs of the Dead (Kindertotenlieder)

Mahler deeply admired Bruckner and, as a conductor, actively dedicated himself to performing his symphonies and making them more accessible to a wider audience. With the Kindertotenlieder , Gustav Mahler composed five deeply moving songs in which he confronted his own mortality, with music in which grief and loss go hand in hand with solace and acceptance. Six of his fourteen siblings died during Mahler's childhood. That loss had a tremendous influence on his composing, which is palpable in the Kindertotenlieder . Despite the heavy subject matter, the music is comforting and wondrously beautiful.
