Hartford Area Roller Derby New Skater Boot Camp

WHAT IT IS:

Hartford Area Roller Derby’s New Skater Bootcamp is a 7 week course dedicated to teaching people how to skate and play roller derby. In this class, you will learn basic skate skills including how to stop, how to turn, skate with crossovers, and how to fall safely, as well as all the rules of how the game works!

Never skated before? That's okay! We will teach you. We will even loan you gear and skates for a while until you decide if this is the sport for you!

Our New Skater Bootcamp meets twice a week, once on Sundays for skating practice, and once on Wednesdays for rules, Non Skating Officiating and off skates cross training workout. At the end of the 7 weeks, you will have the chance to become a full member of HARD as either a skater or referee.

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

Skaters who are:

Adults 18+ years old*

Able to stand on skates unassisted.

Get up from a fall without help

*HARD is dedicated to inclusion. As a WFTDA sanctioned league we abide WFTDA’s statement on gender. Female, female-identifying, and non-binary skaters can be teamed & play competitively, and male and male identifying skaters can become referees only. The sport of roller derby is for everybody regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, size, shape, weight. Our league welcomes ALL SKATERS!

HOW MUCH: $100 for 7 weeks, 2 classes per week

WHEN: Wednesdays and Sundays**

Week 1: Wednesday 4/10 - 7-9 pm Introduction to the program and derby. Gear distribution. | Sunday 4/14 - 6-8 pm Skating Practice

Week 2: Wednesday 4/17 - 7-9 pm Rules Learning/NSO/ off skate workout | Sunday 4/21 - 6-8 pm Skating Practice

Week 3: Wednesday 4/24 - 7-9 pm Rules Learning/NSO/ off skate workout | Sunday 4/14 - 6-8 pm Skating Practice

Week 4: Wednesday 5/1 - 7-9 pm Rules Learning/NSO/ off skate workout | Sunday 5/5 - 6-8 pm Skating Practice

Week 5: Wednesday 5/8 - 7-9 pm Rules Learning/NSO/ off skate workout | Sunday 5/12 MOTHERS DAY NO PRACTICE

Week 6: Wednesday 5/15 - 7-9 pm Rules Learning/NSO/ off skate workout | Sunday 5/19 - 6-8 pm Skating Practice

Week 7: Wednesday 5/22 - 7-9 pm Rules Learning/NSO/ off skate workout

**Please note, due to events at Ron a Roll, a practice may be rescheduled or pushed to a different time. (This does not happen often, but does on occasion) Any change of schedule will be communicated ahead of time!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Proof of Insurance - Your health insurance card will suffice!

Skates, Pads, Helmet - Don't have your own? No sweat! We’ve got you covered and loaners are included in your reservation for the class. We will email you ahead of time with a survey to get your sizing info! Have your own? Even better! We recommend a low boot (like the ones pictured here). High boot or in-line skates aren’t best for derby. Helmet should be rated for multi-impact. A bike helmet is not suitable for derby.

Mouthguard - You MUST come with a pre-molded mouthguard. Sisu is our preferred brand because it can be remolded, but any moldable mouthguard will do. Please note we do NOT have these available for rent. (because, ew!!)
