Harriton Historic Skills Series: Colonial Penmanship Lecture and Workshop with Ben Bartgis. 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

This three-hour lecture and workshop begins with a lecture with Q&A followed by a two-hour workshop where participants will learn how to make ink, cut quill pens, and how to fold and seal a letter. Ben will also provide individual troubleshooting of writing with a quill pen. Students will leave the class with the ability to cut a quill pen and write with it, and with the following high quality reproduction items suitable for living history settings:

  • 1 cut goose quill pen
  • 1 packet of iron gall ink in letterpress packaging
  • 1 folded and sealed letter
  • 5 sheets of laid paper

Registration fees include: morning coffee and baked goods, all communal supplies used during the workshop such as penknives, ink, inkwells, scratch paper, protective napkins to protect clothes, sealing wax, wafers, etc., and post-workshop access to Ben's bibliography and handouts through Google Docs.

Registration and coffee begin at 9:30 a.m. with the workshop beginning promptly at 10:00 a.m. We will not break for lunch but you are welcome to bring a lunch to eat immediately following the workshop.
