Harptoberfest, the popular annual event sponsored by the Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania, returns for a sixth time with an incredible line-up of talented Harmonica players all backed by an all-star backing band!
Let's start with the featured Harp Players:
First up is Hernan Brizuela, a multi-instrumentalist proficient on the Harmonica, Saxophone, and Bag Pipes. (Don't worry, Hernan has traded in his pipes for the harp ...) Hernan has been playing with multiple bands in the Pittsburgh region for several years, and continually finds a way to please audiences with his skills on the Harmonica as well as the Saxophone. This will be Hernan's first appearance at a Harptoberfest event, but hopefully NOT the last!
Next in line is Pittsburgh's own Johnny Rooster. Though Rooster has put his band on hiatus in recent years so he can pursue his love of Motocross racing, that hasn't diminished his passion for Blues Harmonica. This man has long been a fan favorite in and around Pittsburgh, due largely to his playing and singing coupled with his engaging stage presence and energy. Johnny Rooster appeared as a featured artist at the very first Harmonica Showcase - at the time known as Harpapalooza - and he made another showing back in 2018. It will be great to have him back!
I'm thrilled to announce that our headliner for this year's event will be the exceptionally talented Vizztone Label artist, Tony Holiday! Hailing from Memphis, TN, Tony has a long list of accomplishments on his resume. He has appeared at events large and small throughout North America and Europe, plus made his debut on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise earlier this year. (Look for him again on the 2023 LRBC!) Tony's had great success with his two Porch Session releases which both feature a Who's Who of killer Blues artists, plus he's garnered much deserved notoriety with his latest release, Soul Service, a fantastic recording drenched in the Memphis tradition.
Now for that all-star House Band:
Leading the band for this event, as he has every year since its inception, will be hometown favorite Jimmy Adler. A dedicated student of the Blues, Jimmy has built a proficiency on Blues Guitar like no other in the region. Starting at an early age, he's been determined to learn the subtleties that make this great American art form so special, and he has no intention of stopping anytime soon. (I'm not sure how, but he just keeps getting better!)
The Keys will once again be expertly handled by John "The Junkman" Burgh. John is an amazing and talented musician with a firm grasp on his instrument, along with an understanding of nearly any style he's asked to play. Add to the equation his effervescent personality and engaging demeanor, and the room just gets brighter!
How about a rhythm section consisting of New Jersey's Gordon Grottenthaler on Drums, and Connecticut's Mike Law on Upright and Electric Bass? Both of these guys have toured with some of the best in the business over their many years as professional musicians; names you may recognize like Duke Robillard, J. Geils & Magic Dick (Gordon) and Kim Wilson, Mark Hummel, Mud Morganfield (Mike) just to name a few! They are both veterans of Harptoberfest, and are eager to take part in this year's event.
The Emcee duties will, as usual, be handled by Charlie Barath, who's also been involved in this popular event since its beginning in 2016. Charlie will warm up this great House Band with a couple tunes before bringing the real stars of the show on stage for their individual set of music. (He may even join the boys on the bandstand for the encore ...)
Sincere thanks to the Blues Society of Western PA for sponsoring this event, the brainchild of Tuck Majeran!
