Soulful Strings is brought to you by the Europe chapter of SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music, Arts and Culture Among the Youth) as part of the “Harmony Series” to celebrate and exchange ideas from the priceless cultural heritage of India and Europe.
About the artists
Our line up of artists this year pays tribute to the mellifluous resonance of Indian classical music's string instruments the Sarangi and the violin which will be celebrated in the two segments of the concert.
The first segment of this event will be by Sarangi stalwart Ustad Sabir Khan and Dutch Tabla artist, Heiko Dijker.
- Ustad Sabir Khan- Ustad Sabir Khan is a celebrated Indian Sarangi player representing the Sikar gharana of Indian classical Music. Sabir Khan's contemporary yet everlasting style is influenced by the hypnotic nuances of Sufi music while drawing on the intricate rhythms of Indian classical dance.
- Heiko Dijker- Heiko Dijker is a Dutch-born tabla player and percussionist based in Amsterdam. His lifelong dedication to mastering the tabla has made him a prominent figure in the field of Indian classical music among the Dutch Community
The second segment of the event will be by Dr Mysore Manjunath, BC Manjunath, Sumanth Manjunath and Ned McGowan.
- Dr Mysore Manjunath- Mysore Manjunath is a highly acclaimed violinist in the realm of Indian Classical music. A child prodigy and recipient of India's highest musical honour the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Mysore Manjunath's captivating musical style has enthralled audiences worldwide earning him recognition as one of the finest violinists of his generation.
- BC Manjunath-B. C. Manjunath is a renowned Indian Mridangam player known for his contributions to Indian classical music, Jazz, and World music. He is also acclaimed for his expertise in Konnakol, emphasising its incredible link to mathematical structures such as the Fibonacci Tala.
- Sumanth Manjunath- Sumanth Manjunath, represents the modern generation of Indian classical violinists. Sumanth is often referred to as the wonder violin kid in the music industry, praised for his improvisations with a variety of musical styles having performed with internationally acclaimed Arabic, western classical and jazz musicians.
- Dr Ned McGowan- Ned McGowan is an American-born flutist based in Utrecht, Netherlands. Known for his work and skill in contrabass flute, Ned McGowan's compositions are influenced by European contemporary, improvisational and non western styles that will bring a unique aspect to this segment of the concert.
We strongly believe that a concert of this nature is an excellent avenue for cultural exchange between music enthusiasts and also artists from India and Netherlands. We eagerly look forward to having you in the audience!

Format of the event
Soulful Strings will start with the magical melody of Sarangi wielded by Ustad Sabir Khan and accompanied by Dutch Tabla Artist Heiko Dijker. This will be a one-hour event after which a thirty-minute break will follow for snacks. The second segment of the concert will consist of a performance by violin virtuoso Dr Mysore Manjunath, accompanied by his son Sumanth Manjunath who will also wield the violin, BC Manjunath on the percussion instrument, the mridangam and Dr Ned McGowan on the flute. Both performances will also have a Q&A session at the end.
The event provides a unique opportunity to experience the highest level of Indian Classical Music along with a strong sense of culture and community is heralded by SPIC MACAY Europe.
Who are we?
SPIC MACAY (founded in 1977) is a non-government, non-profit movement that promotes art-form heritage such as Indian classical music, dance, yoga and other art forms amongst the youth. Every year, SPIC MACAY arranges more than 5000 programs in more than 1500 institutions across almost 1000 cities worldwide, touching over 3 million students. This also includes hitherto neglected rural children where SPIC MACAY is making a concerted effort to consciously have students from rural areas in corporation and government schools by organizing an increasing number of programmes.
