This playful and immersive workshop is designed for those who are new or fairly new to the harmonium. Together we’ll explore the basics, with the aim of giving you the confidence to play and sing simple chants. Whether you wish to deepen your personal practice, share with friends and family, bring chanting into your yoga classes, or eventually lead your own Kirtan, this is a beautiful place to begin.
We’ll begin the workshop by getting familiar with the harmonium and learning how to navigate the keyboard with ease and confidence. You’ll discover different playing techniques and explore chords and chord inversions—simple tools that can make playing much more intuitive. From there, we’ll learn a few easy chants and start to see how, with just a handful of chords, a whole world of Kirtan becomes accessible. You’ll receive a chant sheet to take home, giving you a solid foundation to continue your practice in the weeks and months ahead. This workshop is just the beginning—like any musical journey, regular practice is the key!
As we learn to play, we’ll also join our voices in chant. So many of us carry quiet fears or judgments about how we sound—but in the warmth of shared mantra, these begin to soften. Chanting together invites us to move beyond the mind’s chatter, to feel the joy of our voices as vessels of truth and beauty. To lead Kirtan is not to perform, but to open—to sing from the heart, where love and devotion flow unhindered, like a river returning to the sea.
This is an intimate workshop, limited to just three participants, so early booking is essential. I have three spare harmoniums available for anyone who doesn’t have their own—please get in touch if you’d like to reserve one.
Tim Chalice has been guiding Kirtan for nearly 20 years, sharing his heartfelt chants at bhakti and yoga festivals, retreats, and sacred gatherings. He has released two Kirtan albums and continues to offer his voice in service of devotion and connection. Tim is also a graduate of The Naked Voice, trained in its transformative vocal practices that awaken presence, authenticity, and deep listening.
