A community conversation and accessible workshop with Farmer9th!
About this Event

Due to requests from our community, we're bringing our second Edition of Hard Food For Hard Times!

Hard Food for Hard Times is a workshop series about food, growing and how we provision for ourselves and each other in hard times.

This follows our Chapter 1 workshop in May with culinary artist and chef Safiya Robinson aka Sisterwoman, where we explored the provision grounds cultivated by formerly enslaved Africans in the Caribbean, made our own preserves, and looked at the histories behind the Caribbean foods we now call hard food.

For Chapter 2, we’re joined by Louis aka Farmer9th for a practical session on growing food in London, especially in small homes and on windowsills. We’ll share seeds, learn simple growing techniques and look at what you can realistically grow at home, leaving with a kit and materials to get started.

Louis, aka Farmer9th, is a South Londoner of Caribbean heritage and a sound engineer by day, with a passion for growing food in the city. Known for his popular Instagram and TikTok content, he shares practical, accessible ways to grow your own food in everyday urban spaces, showing what’s possible even without a garden.

Tickets start at £7 and are subsidised by us. Your ticket helps cover the cost of the growing kits, food, materials and people involved in making the workshop happen.

WHY DO OUR TICKETS COST DIFFERENT AMOUNTS?

Our overheads are the same for everyone who takes part, but we don’t think everyone should have to contribute the same amount towards them.

Hard Food for Hard Times is interested in food, wages and what everyday necessities actually cost us. For this workshop, we’ve based our ticket tiers loosely on local earnings in Tower Hamlets and a simple position: the same price does not cost everyone the same.

As part of this experiment, £11, £17 and £27 roughly reflect 10% of a working day’s gross pay at different points in the local earnings distribution. Our £7 ticket is more heavily subsidised for people on lower or insecure incomes.

Tier 1 — £7
For people earning under £29,000 a year, receiving Universal Credit, unemployed, or whose work is insecure or unpredictable.

Tier 2 — £11
For people earning around £29,000–£45,000 a year.

Tier 3 — £17
For people earning around £45,000–£70,000 a year.

Tier 4 — £27
For people earning £70,000 or more a year.

These are guides rather than fixed categories. Income doesn’t tell us everything about someone’s circumstances, so choose the contribution that makes the most sense for you.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN YOUR TICKET?

Light dinner and conversation

A growing kit to take home

Guests will join a hands-on growing class with guided discussion on food justice, cultural resilience and contemporary approaches to sustainable provisioning. You will leave with a growing kit and lessons in growing your own provisions at home.

We also invite guests to be part of the temporary regenerative economy by bringing some veg left over in your fridge to contribute to the food we’ll eat that day.

ACCESS

House of Annetta is a historic building and is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. There is a step into the building, no lift to the upper floors, and some floors and steps are uneven.

The toilet is located in the garden, has a step down into it and is not wheelchair accessible. The nearest accessible toilet is at Old Spitalfields Market, approximately 240 metres away.

If you have access requirements or would like to talk through the space before booking, please get in touch.

Money shouldn’t be a barrier to coming. If you need help with the cost of a ticket or travel to the workshop, email [email protected] and we’ll see what support we can offer.

please note donation purchase is not a ticket, email me if you ordered by mistake
