“A heart can be broken, but it will keep beating just the same.” Welcome to Harbour Highlights, a series of cult and classic favourites handpicked by the staff of Harbour Lights. For February, staff member Ella takes us to the Whistle Stop Café for the heartwarming Fried Green Tomatoes.
While visiting an ailing relative at a nursing home, 40-something housewife Evelyn strikes up a conversation with the elderly Ninny. Enthralled by the tales Ninny weaves of the now-abandoned town of Whistle Stop and its inhabitants, Evelyn’s encounters with Ninny becomes a friendship as the history of Whistle Stop and its café is revealed.
The film became a notable hit in 1991, buoyed by the chemistry of Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates, a pairing which also happened to be the most recent winners of the Academy Award for Best Actress (for Driving Miss Daisy and Misery, respectively). The film would go on to earn Tandy another Oscar nomination, as well as a nomination for its screenplay, and become a witty and heartwarming favourite for many, not least due to its GLAAD Media Award-winning sensitive portrayal of queer women. Full of warmth and an incredible cast at the top of their game, the film is – unlike its title fruits – ripe for rediscovery.
