Sponsored by the Filipino-American Association of Greater Columbia, SC (FAAGC), a film about the harana, or traditional courtship in the Philippines where men introduced themselves and wooed women by singing underneath her window at night. Tickets are free but must be reserved through the link below.
About the film: Upon his father’s death, Florante Aguilar, a classically trained guitarist living in California returns to the Philippines after 12 years of absence. Intent on unearthing these lost HARANA songs, Florante travels to remote provinces where he discovers 3 surviving practitioners of this lost art form- a farmer, a fisherman, and a tricycle driver. Astounded by their voices, they travel with him to perform and record these songs, resulting in sold-out public performances at the Manila Cultural Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and others, all documented for an award-winning film in a search for this lost tradition. The question still remains: will HARANA be lost in time, or can it be resurrected to its former glory?
