Led by Prashanti LovegroveSpend the morning diving into the world of raranga harakeke. Gain a deeper appreciation of this amazing natural fiber and learn some basket weaving techniques. We will discuss and follow Tikanga Māori (traditional protocols) covering harakeke harvest, preparation and traditional weaving techniques.
This workshop has limited numbers to keep group size small for a quality experience and opportunities for one-on-one support. You'll leave inspired and empowered to continue creating simple two corner baskets.
This workshop is targeted for absolute beginners, however those with some weaving experience can also be accommodated and extended.
Prashanti Lovegrove has a deep love and appreciation for our natural world and Te Ao Māori. As Tangata Tiriti, Prashanti has been mentored by master weavers from Te Tai Tokorau and has been practicing basket weaving for over 20years. She has been living in Nelson for the past five years. Guided by traditional protocols and methodologies, Prashanti weaves functional art pieces with harakeke whenu.
With much experience in the education sector, Prashanti has great energy and a kind disposition to guide participants through the many steps of weaving.
Prashanti enjoys making baskets small and large, kete whakairo, kete whiri, potae and flat wall hangings. She has her own Pā Harakeke of special weaving varieties and will prepare ample whenu (flax strips) for participants to use on the day.
