About this Event
Join us Tuesday, March 31st for Hanuman Jayanti: Kirtan, Story & Sacred Song, a two-hour community gathering honouring the birth of Hanuman—the beloved deity revered for his strength, wisdom, humility, and unwavering devotion in the epic Ramayana.
This special evening weaves together contemporary music, traditional mantra, storytelling, and shared reflection in a warm and welcoming space. Through chant and song, we celebrate Hanuman’s spirit of service and the power of devotion as a living, embodied practice.
The evening will open with a 20-minute musical offering from Victoria-based indie band Northcote, sharing contemporary interpretations of the Hanuman Chalisa and other sacred mantras. This will be followed by harmonium-led, call-and-response kirtan guided by Swapnil, Lakshmi, and Matt.
Midway through the gathering, we’ll explore:
- Who is Hanuman?
- What is the Hanuman Chalisa?
- What is a Guru?
Presenters will share stories from the Ramayana along with personal reflections on their spiritual paths, including Matt’s connection to the teachings of Neem Karoli Baba.
The evening will conclude with communal chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa, accompanied by an English translation reading, including English 11 recitations by Sean Sullivan.
Hanuman Jayanti is a celebration of courage, devotion, and the transformative power of sacred sound. Whether you are new to kirtan or deeply rooted in mantra practice, this gathering offers an opportunity to sing, listen, learn, and connect in community.
No prior experience with chanting or yoga philosophy is required. All are welcome.
What to Bring:
Comfortable clothing, a water bottle, and anything that helps you feel at ease. You are welcome to bring a journal if you’d like to reflect during the teachings. Please arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
