“You just wouldn't believe how cool we all sound now.”

A video to whet your appetite:
This video, filmed at our Winter Weekender in 2013 (Woah, that decade flew by quickly!), showcases what you can expect to enjoy at HansCamp East:

FOUR DAYS OF GORGEOUS WEST AFRICAN RHYTHMS
For intermediate, advanced, and masterclass level drummers: djembe, dunduns and songs with Hans Sutton and friends, plus the opportunity to play and jam in the evenings with your fellow HansCampers, and bust out some dance moves too! Over 21 hours of the highest quality teaching from Friday 18th to Monday 21st April, or 27 hours for the handful of insatiables who go to every class!!!

Classes run from the Friday morning to the Monday afternoon. We’ll work on a couple of pieces, but in great depth, with lots of material for each one. We’ll cover several songs, breaks and djembe solo series; dundun parts and variations; plus exercises to develop precision and feel, including work on the different types of swing for the pieces covered.

THREE NIGHTS' ACCOMMODATION IN SHARED ROOMS
Set in 13 acres, with a river meandering through the grounds, Eaton Vale is a well-equipped, modern and peaceful site, with full disabled access. There is a lovely outdoor patio area, a big playing field, and a large campfire circle for the more hardy. Accommodation is in comfortable shared bedrooms (with more bedrooms added to the venue since 2020), strategically organised so that Early Risers and Night Owls can happily coexist in harmony. Spaces for tents and camper vans are also available.
Eaton Vale is just 3.5 miles from Norwich, which has good road, rail and bus links.
OPTIONAL THURSDAY NIGHT
For those wishing to travel up the night before, therefore avoiding the Bank Holiday traffic, there is also an option for Thursday night accommodation and breakfast. This is typically taken up by a good number of HansCampers, who come early to enjoy settling in with mellow music and (optional!) ridiculous parlour games. In 2025, the extra night’s accommodation will cost just £23 per person (for dormitory-dwellers, or £13 per person for campervanners or campers).

FEASTING
All HansCamp food will be vegetarian; any special dietary requirements should be discussed with the HansCamp team, preferably before booking, and will be cheerfully accommodated wherever possible. Vegans can always be catered for, if we are given sufficient notice. HansCamp East will provide vegetarian breakfasts and lunches from Friday morning to Monday lunchtime (inclusive), plus Sunday dinner. A carefully selected catering team will provide these delicious and sustaining meals, and all HansCampers indulge in the pleasures of collectively preparing a delicious meal with fellow drummers.

ABOUT HANS
Hans is widely considered to be the most skilled, thorough and patient teacher from the UK, renowned for his fiendishly logical brain and superhuman multi-tasking skills. His knowledge of djembe repertoire has been gleaned through numerous trips to West Africa - particularly to Mali, whose drumming traditions he considers to be the richest in the region. With over 20 years’ experience performing and teaching West African rhythms, Hans is an outstanding musician who knows how to communicate his in-depth knowledge to students of all levels and learning styles.

Although his classes can be rigorous and demanding, they are exhilarating and very rewarding. This is a superb opportunity for you to improve your djembe and dundun abilities, and further develop your knowledge and understanding of West African rhythms.

TESTIMONIALS
If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of learning with Hans, here are some comments from workshop attendees:
“He confirmed and clarified many things I've been pondering for a while now and not managed to get any other teacher to fully explain.... it was like light bulbs going on all over the place.”
“Somehow he manages to get it in your head even without you realising. I think it may be witchcraft.”
“Hans's teaching style and techniques are fantastic! Really clear and easy to understand.”
“The variety Hans introduces into his teaching days is peerless. His understanding of what it means to be a "Western" learner makes his workshops very accessible.”
“One of the best classes I've been to! So many insights and ‘aha!’ moments in a rich and action packed day. A highly skilled, truly talented and generous teacher!”
“Excellent teaching as always. So thorough, and such patience with lots of good humour thrown in!”
HOW THE TEACHING LEVELS WORK
The catchiest material and essential elements of the arrangement get covered with the whole group; for more solos and dundun variations the group splits into Intermediate and Advanced classes; and there’s further Pro-level tuition, usually at beginning or end of the normal teaching day. The bulk of tuition is with Hans, with some classes led by Hans’s carefully-chosen assistants who also help out with some stonking dundun accompaniment.
BOOKLET AND RECORDING SESSION
Each HansCamper receives a comprehensive booklet containing all the notation and plenty of other information about the pieces (history, connections with other repertoire, swing, suggested listening, etc...). Hans and his crew of dundun players demonstrate all the material in a separate evening session, for HansCampers to record with whatever gadgets they choose. Video recordings are shared amongst the group.
BOOKING/REGISTRATION
In order to preserve the quality of teaching and learning that you expect from HansCamp, places for HansCamp East are strictly limited. Booking is now open!
