To, że „Sąd Ostateczny” Hansa Memlinga inspiruje, nikogo nie dziwi. Nawet jeśli chwilowo nie można go oglądać ze względu na szereg badań, którym jest poddawany w przygotowaniu do ponownej ekspozycji w grudniu 2026 roku, na różny sposób można z nim obcować poprzez twórczość innych artystów.
Niedawno w Teatrze Wybrzeże mieliśmy premierę „Memling, czyli historia końca świata” w reżyserii znanej z wizualnej wyobraźni Agaty Dudy-Gracz, a w wyjątkowej scenerii Oddziału Sztuki Dawnej Muzeum Narodowego mogliśmy oglądać kolekcję mody „Psychostatis” Magdaleny Arłukiewicz i Jadwigi Możdżer w oprawie muzycznej Leszka Możdżera.
💬 Wielokrotnie usiłowałem przyjrzeć się tryptykowi, ale zawsze był w pancernej skrzyni. Pamiętam moją frustrację kilkanaście lat temu, gdy przyjechałem z kamerą nakręcić na swój użytek zbliżenia potępionych i ułaskawionych postaci, które Memling tak fenomenalnie namalował. Odbiłem się wtedy od ściany, owej szklanej ściany ochronnej gabloty, rodzaju lustra, w którym przeglądały się twarze zwiedzających oraz lampy pomieszczenia. Usiadłem na ławce i zastanawiałem się, jak mogę przebić się przez szklaną barierę – być może jest taki moment, w którym ogromna gablota zostaje zdjęta dla renowacji obrazu – opowiada Lech Majewski, ceniony międzynarodowy artysta o ogromnym dorobku twórczym, poeta, malarz, pisarz i reżyser filmowy, teatralny i operowy.
Taki moment przyszedł podczas pandemii COVID-19, kiedy tryptyk został wyjęty z gabloty, aby sprawdzić jego stan. Artysta mógł wreszcie przyjrzeć się za pośrednictwem obiektywu kamery szczegółom obrazu. Korzystając przez kolejne lata z zarejestrowanych materiałów, Lech Majewski stworzył narrację o przejmującej wizji Sądu Ostatecznego, uzupełnioną o efekty animacji i dźwięku.
💬 Powstała w ten sposób współczesna Biblia Pauperum, której ożywiona forma jeszcze dobitniej przybliża historie zawarte w obrazie ponad 550 lat temu. Wodząc oczami po detalach tryptyku w ślad za ruchem kamery, widz odkrywa na nowo tajniki skomplikowanej i wielowątkowej historii w nim zawartej – komentuje dyrektor Muzeum Narodowego w Gdańsku Piotr Stasiowski.
Wideofresk będzie prezentowany w kapitularzu w Oddziale Sztuki Dawnej Muzeum Narodowego. Ta szczególna przestrzeń dawnego klasztoru franciszkańskiego pełni ważną rolę w odbiorze dzieła, które ma formę tryptyku, zgodnie z układem oryginalnego obrazu. W centralnym planie przedstawiony jest Chrystus ukazany na złotym tle, zasiadający na tęczy, ze stopami spoczywającymi na złotej sferze. Poniżej Archanioł Michał stoi pośród rozległej równiny, oddzielając dusze błogosławione od potępionych. Po lewej stronie błogosławieni wstępują do Królestwa Niebieskiego, a po prawej demony porywają potępionych do piekła. „Sąd Ostateczny”, który przez wieki doczekał się wielu opracowań i analiz naukowych, tym razem przedstawiony w formie wideofresku staje się przystępny dla każdego odbiorcy, odkrywając swoje piękno i grozę.
💬 W 2001 roku we współpracy z Biennale w Palagraziussi w Wenecji otwarta została wystawa moich prac wideo La Camera dei Caprioli. Krytyka włoska, pisząc o „ulotnych ruchomych obrazach płynących na ścianach Oratorio Palagraziussi” nazwała je „videofresco” i tak już zostało, tworząc łuk pomiędzy starą techniką malarską, a technologią współczesną – wyjaśnia pochodzenie pojęcia wideofresk Lech Majewski.
Otwarciu prezentacji będzie towarzyszyło spotkanie z Lechem Majewskim, które odbędzie się w sobotę 15 listopada o godz. 12.00.
Artysta opowie m.in. o swoich motywacjach i inspiracjach do stworzenia filmowej adaptacji najważniejszego obrazu z kolekcji Muzeum Narodowego w Gdańsku. Na pewno podzieli się też swoją wiedzą, korzystając z wieloletniego doświadczenia prowadzenia wykładów na temat ukrytego języka symboli.

👤 Lech Majewski jest cenionym międzynarodowym artystą o ogromnym dorobku twórczym. Zajmuje się poezją, malarstwem, pisaniem oraz reżyserią filmową, teatralną i operową. Jego prace są pokazywane w galeriach i muzeach całego świata. Prowadzi też wykłady na temat ukrytego języka symboli na różnych uniwersytetach i uczelniach. Jest członkiem Amerykańskiej Akademii Sztuki i Wiedzy Filmowej, Gildii Reżyserów Amerykańskich i Europejskiej Akademii Filmowej. Studiował w Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie oraz na Wydziale Reżyserii PWSFTviT w Łodzi.

How can a renowned artist reinterpret the work of another renowned artist? What if the artist is Lech Majewski and the masterpiece is Hans Memling’s The Last Judgement? On 14 November at 6.00 p.m., the National Museum in Gdańsk will open an exhibition in the former chapter house of the Franciscan monastery. The exhibition will present a triptych of video frescoes offering a new perspective on this well-known painting.
It comes as no surprise that Hans Memling’s The Last Judgement continues to inspire. Although the painting cannot currently be viewed due to ongoing conservation work in preparation for its re-exhibition in December 2026, it can still be experienced through the work of other artists. Recently, the Wybrzeże Theatre premiered Memling, or The Story of the End of the World, directed by Agata Duda-Gracz, who is renowned for her remarkable visual imagination. Meanwhile, visitors to the Medieval and Early Modern Art Collection Department at the National Museum in Gdańsk could see Psychostatis, a fashion collection by Magdalena Arłukiewicz and Jadwiga Możdżer accompanied by music composed by Leszek Możdżer.
💬 ‘I tried many times to take a close look at the triptych, but it was always locked away in its armoured case. I remember feeling frustrated years ago when I came with a camera to film close-ups of the damned and the redeemed — the figures that Memling painted so brilliantly. I hit a wall — quite literally, the glass protective wall of the display case — a kind of mirror reflecting the faces of visitors and the room’s lights. I sat down on a bench and wondered how I could break through that glass barrier. Perhaps there’s a moment when the massive case is removed for restoration,’ recalls Lech Majewski — a renowned international artist with an extensive body of work, as well as a poet, painter, writer, and film, theatre, and opera director.
That moment came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the triptych was removed from its display case for an assessment of its condition. It was then that the artist was finally able to examine the painting’s details through his camera lens. Using the recorded material over the following years, Lech Majewski created a narrative offering a powerful and moving vision of The Last Judgement, enriched with animation and sound effects.
💬 ‘The result is a modern Biblia Pauperum — a living form that brings to life, even more vividly, the stories captured in the painting over 550 years ago. As viewers follow the camera’s gaze across the triptych’s details, they rediscover its intricate, multilayered narrative,’ says Piotr Stasiowski, Director of the National Museum in Gdańsk.
A video fresco will be presented in the Chapter House of the Department of Medieval and Early Modern Art at the National Museum. This exceptional space, which was once part of a Franciscan monastery, plays a key role in how the work is perceived. The work takes the form of a triptych that echoes the composition of the original painting. Christ is depicted in the central part of the composition against a gilded background, seated on a rainbow with his feet resting on a golden sphere. Below, the Archangel Michael stands on a vast plain, separating the souls of the blessed from those of the damned. The blessed ascend to the Kingdom of Heaven on the left, while demons drag the damned into Hell on the right. The subject of the Last Judgement has inspired countless scholarly studies and interpretations over the centuries, and is now presented as a video fresco, bringing its beauty and gravity closer to today’s audiences and offering a new, accessible way to experience this timeless theme.
💬 ‘In 2001, in collaboration with the Biennale at Palagraziussi in Venice, an exhibition of my video works, La Camera dei Caprioli, was opened. Italian critics writing about 'the fleeting moving images flowing across the walls of the Oratorio Palagraziussi’ coined the term 'video fresco’ to describe the exhibition, and it has stuck ever since, forming a bridge between the ancient art of painting and contemporary technology,” explains Lech Majewski, describing the origin of the term.
The presentation will open with a meeting with Lech Majewski on Saturday, 15 November at 12:00 p.m., where the artist will discuss the motivations and inspirations behind creating the film adaptation of the National Museum in Gdańsk’s most important painting. Drawing on his many years of experience lecturing on the subject, he will also share his expertise in the hidden language of symbols.

👤 Lech Majewski is an internationally acclaimed artist with a diverse and extensive body of work. He works as a poet, painter, writer and director of films, theatre productions and operas. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. He also lectures on the hidden language of symbols at various universities and art schools. He is a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Directors Guild of America and the European Film Academy. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and the Faculty of Directing at the Łódź Film School.
