Hanne Strager visits the store to launch The Killer Whale Journals, a fascinating insight into the world of the orca―and our relationship with them. She'll be joined by journalist David Neiwert, who published his own take on the incomparable whale, Of Orcas and Men: What Killer Whales Can Teach Us.
In The Killer Whales Journals, Strager traces the complicated relationship between humans and killer whales, while delving into their behavior, biology, and ecology. She brings us along in her travels to the most remote corners of the world, battling the stormy Arctic seas of northern Norway with fellow biologists intent on decoding whale-song, interviewing First Nations conservationists in Vancouver, observing Inuit hunters in Greenland, and witnessing the dismantling of black market "whale jails" in the Russian wilderness of Kamchatka. Killer whales' incredible intelligence, long life spans, and strong family bonds lead many people to see them as kindred spirits in the sea. But not everyone feels this way―like wolves, orcas have been both beloved and vilified throughout human history.
Hanne Strager is a Danish biologist, whale researcher, and author. She was awarded the Copenhagen University Natural Sciences Faculty’s prize for science communication in 2009 and was the director of exhibitions at the Natural History Museum of Denmark from 2003-2016.
David Neiwert is an award-winning investigative journalist and the author of several books, including Red Pill, Blue Pill: How to Counteract the Conspiracy Theories that are Killing Us (Prometheus 2020), Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump (Verso 2017), Of Orcas and Men: What Killer Whales Can Teach Us (Overlook 2016), and And Hell Followed With Her: Crossing the Dark Side of the American Border (Nation Books 2013).
