About this Event
UDC College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) offers 15 hours of online and practicum hyrbid composting certificate program, Thursday, September 11, 2025 through Saturday, September 20, 2025.
What To Expect:
Learn to Turn Your Kitchen Scraps into Garden Gold!
Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop where you'll discover how easy it is to transform your food scraps into rich compost that feeds your plants and helps our planet.
Real demonstrations, take-home materials, and plenty of time for questions. You'll even get to take some starter compost home with you!
In this Interactive Class, You'll Learn:
- How to start composting in your own kitchen or backyard
- What your neighborhood and city offer for composting support
- Simple techniques that actually work (no complicated systems!)
- How composting reduces waste and fights climate change
- Ways to grow healthier food using your homemade compost
Who Should Take this Course:
Perfect for beginners and the experienced. UDC students, or local community members. Whether you have a tiny apartment or a big yard, you'll leave with practical tips you can use right away. Bring your questions—and get ready to become your neighborhood's composting champion.

Session 1, September 11: Virtual Lecture, 4:00 to 6:30 pm
Session 2, September 13: In-person Hands-on Experience, 9 am to 2 pm*
Session 3, September 18: Virtual Lecture, 4:00 to 6:30 pm
Session 4, September 20: In-person Hands-on Experience, 9 am to 2 pm*
Credentials Earned: This is a non-credit bearing course. A certificate will be issued to participants who successful complete all four training sessions.
Cost: $150
Payment Options:
Payments can be made in the form of a check or money order. Payments must be received on or by the first day of the training. Participants may pay by cash at the Cashier’s Office in advance of class during hours of operation.

Instructor: Dr. Emmanuel D'Silva is an Agriculture and Environmental Specialist, writer, and lecturer. He has worked for over three decades in Asia, Africa, and Latin America on agriculture, the environment, renewable energy, and climate change projects, mainly with the World Bank. His current focus is on composting, converting waste into energy, regenerative agriculture, and ecological restoration.
