The Bach Society of Queensland has a long tradition of performing George Frideric Handel's beloved oratorio recounting the narrative of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This year’s is a particularly special one, however, marking our 50th annual performance of this seasonal favourite.
To mark this anniversary, we will be presenting Mozart’s arrangement of the work, which was first performed in 1789 and used in the Bach Society’s first performance of Messiah in 1976. In reworking Handel’s characteristically-Baroque original to make use of the instrumentation of the Classical orchestra of his day, Mozart maintains the essence and integrity of Handel while adding a fuller texture and a greater variety in tonal colour for an even more vibrant telling of the greatest story ever told.
