“We are in for an enormous musical treat with the performance of Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration. The musical genius of Quincy Jones brings Handel’s Messiah right up to date for today’s audience through this musical masterpiece. We will be treated to different musical styles, ranging from the African roots of modern jazz and gospel to hip-hop. While the Soulful Celebration remains true to the emotion and faith expressed by Handel, his Baroque arias and choruses take on a new, exciting and infectious mood. I am thrilled to be compering this performance and hope to see you among the audience.”
This 20th anniversary production from Renewal Choir is a sumptuous three-course musical experience — crafted to stir the soul, lift the spirit and leave you rejoicing.
🥂 The Appetiser – Spoken Word to Awaken the Senses
We begin with a powerful spoken word to music from Sukina Noor, Bristol City Poet (2024–2026).
Sukina Noor is a poet, spoken-word artist, playwright, workshop facilitator, educator, event curator and public speaker. Having toured extensively across the UK, Europe, America and Africa, she brings global insight and local resonance. Her words will open the evening with depth, reflection and expressive clarity — preparing us for the feast to follow.
🎶 The Main Course – A Feast of Sound
Under the brilliant and expressive leadership of Choir Director Kim Samuels, and the accomplished musical direction of Phil Barclay, more than 60 choir voices will be joined by gifted vocalists and musicians — among the city’s and the nation’s finest gospel artists.
This is not simply Handel performed traditionally. It is a bold reimagining inspired by the musical genius of Quincy Jones, honouring the spiritual and emotional power of The Messiah while infusing it with gospel, soul, jazz and contemporary rhythms.
Expect soaring harmonies. Infectious grooves. Moments of intimacy and explosive celebration. A sound that bridges centuries — and speaks directly to today.

And then comes the glorious finale.
The triumphant Hallelujah Chorus — lifted by over 60 voices and a dynamic live band — filling the hall with joy, power and collective celebration. A moment to stand, to rejoice, and to be part of something bigger than ourselves.
