Please join us as we welcome writers Joan Baranow, Joseph Zaccardi and Matthew M. Monte, who will read from their work.Joan Baranow’s Aphids in the Rose, published by Finishing Line Press, charts her intimate experience of breast cancer, from the shock of diagnosis to treatment to healing. Interwoven throughout her journey are poems about the fragility and resilience of nature, where she finds she is not alone in her struggle. Like the gull in the rain “just standing there,” she withstands the ordeal of disease and goes back into the world with renewed gratitude and wonder.
Joan is the author of six poetry collections. A fellow of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and member of the Community of Writers, she founded and teaches in the Low-Residency MFA program in Creative Writing at Dominican University of CA.
Songbirds of the Nine Rivers, by Joseph Zaccardi, was published by Sixteen Rivers Press in April 2023. His poems have appeared in Atlanta Review, Cincinnati Review, Poetry East, Rattle, and elsewhere. Joe served as the poet laureate of Marin County, California, from 2013 to 2015, and edited Changing Harm to Harmony: Bullies and Bystanders Project.
Matthew M. Monte grew up near San Francisco, California and went to the University of Hawaii-Manoa, where he studied botany. His fiction, poetry, book reviews, music reviews, journalism, and essays have appeared in Sidestream, Creosote Journal, Transfer, Ashcan Magazine, The Snackbar Collective, Collective, iNaturalist, Panorama, and the Poets 11 Anthologies (2014 and 2016). His debut collection, The Case of the Six-Sided Dream, won the 2017 Blue Light Poetry Prize.
All Tomorrow’s Train Rides, published by Sixteen Rivers Press in 2023, is an odyssey of reading and poetic memory. What begins as a single day in a worker’s commute morphs into a Möbius loop of literary history and cultural consciousness. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and son.
We will have light refreshment, and time depending, an open mic after our features have read. Please join us for our first in store reading since plague year 2020!
