Learn the foundation of hand quilting through constructing an improv quilt in a 6 session, 12 week course
About this Event

Learn the foundation of hand quilting through constructing an improv quilt. Over six classes, participants will build skills such as colour theory, composition and texture, applique, and hand quilting as they each design a quilt top that reflects their own personal narrative. This hands-on machine-free course is open to all skill levels – no matter your sewing experience, you will leave with a one-of-a-kind quilt!

Materials required: Each participant will need to provide a sheet or large cloth to serve as the base of their quilt top (cotton is best). Students are welcome to bring in fabric of personal significance as well as scraps to incorporate into their quilts or share.

Class Duration:

July 12

July 26

August 9

August 23

September 6

September 20

1pm-3pm each class

Instructor: Daliah Silver

Daliah Silver is a quilter, garment sewer, knitter, banner maker, and everything in between, focusing on hand made, hand stitched, folk based art and craft using second hand or recycled materials. She is the founder of the Chicago Textile Center.

Experience Level:

This class is for all skill levels!

What’s Provided:

  • The WasteShed will supply some fabric but make sure to bring your own large piece of fabric for your quilt base.
  • Participants will learn how to hand quilt
  • All participants will end the class with a one of a kind hand quilted quilt

Anything Else You Need to Know:

(This is a good place to mention anything else they might need to know, like if they will need to return for their pieces, or if the class is limited to adults, etc. It’s also a good place to mention what kind of supplies the participants will need to bring in or provide, like clothes if they are learning to mend for example! If there’s not much else to mention, you can always reiterate what they will learn and tell them that they can bring their own supplies if they want to, or extra supplies.)

Getting There/Where to Park:

Free street parking is available on the street outside of The WasteShed, but spots may be limited so please plan accordingly. The Kimball bus stops right outside our doors! Please let us know if you need wheelchair access.
