Hand Lettering 101 w/ Billie Claire Handmade

Join Claire Vendetti of Billie Claire Handmade for a two-hour workshop on hand lettering, with a focus on modern calligraphy, font building, and learning go-to methods for creating a cohesive lettering composition. Starting with a catchy phrase, students will learn to organize their text for the best visual impact, followed by practicing a variety of hand drawn fonts with two of Claire’s favorite lettering pens. From there, she will walk you through her go-to composition strategies for creating a well-formed lettering design. Each student will get one-on-one guidance on how to achieve the best layout for their piece, and then they will begin sketching in their creative fonts. The class will top everything off with a lesson on adding key embellishments to finalize each unique design. Everyone will leave with a completed (or almost completed) piece, a selection of Claire’s favorite illustration tools, and a packet of practice grids and creative fonts to use on their next project. This class is open to all skill levels - no prior lettering experience required.

Billie Claire is a Richmond-based illustrator specializing in hand lettering, botanical illustrations, and graphic design. She loves making people laugh from the unexpected and enjoys pairing elegant florals with profanity and sass.

Originally from New Mexico and raised by a family of scientists, Billie Claire loves getting lost in nature, observing the tiniest details, and encouraging others to embrace their dark senses of humor. If she's not at a market or in her home studio, you can find her soaking up the sun on the James, eating cake at Shyndigz, or taking 5 million reference photos of flowers in her Church Hill neighborhood.
