Halloween Special: NIGHTBREED (1990)

This Halloween, we wanted to celebrate a Queer Scouse legend who's contribution to the literary world of horror cannot be overlooked.

Clive Barker burst onto the horror scene in the 1980s with his Books of Blood, a series of short stories that immediately established him as a bold new voice in the genre. Known for masterfully blending the gothic and grotesque with the fantastical, Barker’s work reimagines how we approach the monster; showing they are as much about liberation and transformation as they are about terror.

Based on his novella Cabal, NIGHTBREED follows Aaron Boone, a troubled young man manipulated by his psychiatrist, Dr. Decker (played with sadistic menace by David Cronenberg), into believing he’s a serial killer. On the run, Boone stumbles upon a hidden underground city where the “Nightbreed” live, called Midian. There he finds community of outcasts and shapeshifters feared by the human world.

When Decker sets his sights on destroying Midian, Boone finds himself caught between two worlds. To protect the Nightbreed from total decimation, he must embrace the monster within himself..

A film that explores the complex nature of monster in a society that seeks to alienate difference, Nightbreed is absolutley an allegorgy for the queer experience with an insistent message that we should embrace what sets us apart.

Famously meddled with by the studios, we'll be presenting the Director's Cut.
