SPECIAL NOTE: Our Halloween-o-thon will run all day at the 1931 Los Angeles Theatre movie palace, one of the crown jewel opera house cinemas in all of Los Angeles (with its very own ghost stories!).
Food trucks and food court open all day, full bar open all night for our evening Horror block and afterparty - pay as you go, so bring a card.

Few movies have had the meteoric cult favorite rise from nearly forgotten 1990’s Disney programmer to beloved cult classic of almost every age and demographic. How did Disney’s 1993 Hocus Pocus about the comically self-absorbed yet inept 17th century witches-the Sanderson Sisters (played with campy relish by Midler, Najimy, Parker) become such a beloved Halloween classic? Well, its constant replaying on the Disney Channel may have had something to do with it.
But whatever the reasons, the Sanderson sisters and their antics are now beloved by families, teens, adults everyone.
The story finds the Sanderson sisters meeting a nasty end at the hands of angry villagers of 17th century Salemn only to be accidentally re-summoned in the 1990’s on Halloween night is both warm-hearted and subversive. Funny and spooky to whole host of children.
Maybe you grew up with this movie and now want to introduce your own children to the Halloween fun, jokes, and all around fun vibes of Hocus Pocus.

The early 1980’s well. . .they were just a different time. Exhibit 1 - 1984’s Ghostbusters co-written by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis is somehow both a beloved family spooky movie and an amazing National Lampoon, SCTV, and Saturday Night Live alum comedy - one of the best actually.
Rated PG yet filled with tons of ad-libbed and improved adult humour, Ghostbusters is also somehow a crowning special effects 1980’s extravaganza full of model work, a Stay Puft Marshmellow Man kaiju sequence, loads of ghost effects. And a killer soundtrack.
When parapsychology professors Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stanz (Ackroyd) and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) get fired from their jobs for their wacky ideas about ghosts, they decide to set up shop as actual New York “Ghostbusters” a kind of ghost, ghoul, and poltergeist extermination/containment company.
When they actually have success catching and trapping some ghosts, they get the attention of cellist Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) worried her old apartment building might be haunted and officious city official Walter Peck (a great William Atherton) who wants to shut them down.
One of the great 1980’s pop culture sensations, Ghostbusters meets the movie audience at the cross roads of fun scares, hilarious humour, and incredible special effects. Bring the family and marvel at the movie on the big screen.

William Friedkin’s The Exorcist is the horror movie shot heard around the world. The Exorcist and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (made 13 years before) took a genre and fully catapulted it into the modern era.
Actress Chris MacNeill (Burstyn) is horrified to discover her 12 year old daughter Regan (Blair) appears to be developing symptoms that can’t be explained by any mental or physical health disease. When Regan shouts obscenities in a voice that’s not hers and when the house they live in starts to rock and shake, MacNeill fears their may actually be something DEMONIC at work and that the only chance at helping her daughter may be a Catholic exorcism to expel the devil from her little girl.
A movie so horrifying when it came out, audiences actually had anxiety attacks, vomitted in the streets, and ran out of the theater screaming, The Exorcist set a standard and bar that set the terms for the last fifty years of horror.
Friedkin went all out, no holds barred, to terrify his audience with imagery, sequences, and scenes so shocking, so graphic, so horrific there was no going back to a more genteel form of spooky scares.

And so we come to what many consider to be one of the crowning achievements of all horror- Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 hit horror novel The Shining.
When struggling writer and on the wagon alcoholic Jack Torrance gets offered the job as winter caretaker of the remote Overlook Hotel, he needs to take it. He brushes aside the unsettling revelation that a caretaker only a decade before had gone crazy in the long snowy winter and killed his entire family with an ax in the hotel.
But when Jack, wife Wendy (Duvall), and son Danny (Lloyd) begin their stay, strange things start to happen. Danny has “the Shining” the ability to see and hear things no one else can. And the hotel begins to speak to him…
Kubrick proved there wasn’t a genre who couldn’t do better than anyone else with The Shining- an American horror classic. Kubrick, in his meticulous fashion, researched and studied the uncanny, the paranormal, the unexplainable, and suffused his movie with an irreducible, unexplainable dread that made the audience feel they were actually experiencing the haunted terrors of a haunted place.
