Halloween Mushrooms At Pendle

To start with we will taste of Gins made from wild foraged ingredients (non alcohol versions available) and then go walk over the moors and through the woods, stopping to look at fungi that we find. By the end of the course you will be able to recognise and identify a few species of edible mushroom, depending on what we find on the day. I am hoping to find good edible species as well as other 'moorland species' that interest people!

The equipment you need is the same as going for a walk. Boots, waterproofs and some warm clothes. Your own foraging knife and basket for your mushrooms is a bonus, though this will be provided on the day. You will also be provided with a foraging staff that has a double purpose this year as a social distancing staff!

The terrain can get tough as we will need to walk some distance and then up hillsides. You will be tired by the end! The pace, however, is slow and the focus is on discussion and foraging. The woodland is a 1 mile walk from the car park (plus the walk in the woods).

Lunch - please remember to bring some lunch! You will need to keep your energy levels up. There is a cafe in the car park where we meet, but it might not be open when we get back at the end of the course.

Pictured below is a very special mushroom we found in this area last year, the Bicolour Deceiver. Unfortunately the photo isn't as striking as it was in the flesh, but it is a deceiver showing the usual salmon pink colour on the cap and upper section of the stem and the purple colour of the Amethyst Deceiver on the gills and bottom of the stem.
