She has over a decade of experience working with companies and community organizations to tell stories related to the Asian American experience. The Mahjong Project is her effort to preserve a small piece of her family history, bring more people into the joy of playing the game, and encourage others to contemplate unique family traditions in their own lives. The Mahjong Project hosts pop-up mahjong nights around San Francisco and Oakland, and collects stories and anecdotes about mahjong at www.themahjongproject.com.
About Spencer Chang
Spencer Chang is an internet artist and engineer interested in the play, connection, and creation that emerges from our relationships with and through computers. Spanning participatory installations, creative infrastructure, and interactive sculptures, they explore new person-computer relations that invite and empower people to create their own technology. He is primarily concerned with dismantling the use of technology as a tool of institutional oppression in favor of a folk practice of collective play, craft, and care. These works act as "interventions" that prompt people to reflect on their wishes for what technology *could* be, rooted in our historical reality. Check out their website: spencer.place
Their work has been featured in and supported by the de Young Museum, Gray Area, CultureHub, the Ethereum Foundation, MIT Technology Review, APOSSIBLE and Frieze. They are a NEW INC Y11 Art & Code member and have hosted exhibitions and workshops internationally in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, and Amsterdam.
