“Every home gardener can contribute to building a healthy community, and our Fall Symposium will show gardeners how to be even more effective,” said Ginny Spain Thomas, chair of the Hall County Master Gardeners Fall 2024 Symposium.
The event is Saturday, November 9, at the East Hall Community Center, 3911 P Davidson Rd. Gainesville GA 30507. 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $10/person and includes continental breakfast.
The Symposium will be anexciting opportunity to learn the latest research on plant breeding, vertical planting, sustainable urban agriculture, and food preservation from leading experts from the UGA Horticulture Department and from the UGA Extension Family and Consumer Sciences,” said Thomas. Symposium speakers will explore Sustainable Urban Agriculture and how to extend the growing season through a variety of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) practices.
Susie Burton Medina, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent from Banks and Habersham Counties, will kick off the Symposium by discussing the basics of preserving food at home, with an emphasis on canning, including the science and practice of canning safely.
Dr. Bethany Harris, the UGA Griffin campus’s new Director of the Center for Urban Agriculture will explore key principles of sustainability and provide practical production strategies for small
scale operations.
Dr. Andrew Ogden, also from the UGA Griffin campus, will discuss different forms of CEA, from simple to sophisticated, to extend the growing season, along with plant breeding.
