About this Event
The Hadleigh Castle Walk
Wild beauty, big skies and layered history of the Hadleigh shoreline.
Starting beside the estuary near Leigh-on-Sea, we’ll follow the sea wall through peaceful marshland landscapes rich in birdlife and coastal character. Along the way we’ll pass the haunting remains of old boats resting in the mud — a hidden ships’ graveyard that feels wonderfully removed from the bustle of everyday life.
From the marshes we gradually climb into Hadleigh Country Park, now known for its sweeping views and as the venue for the 2012 Olympic mountain biking events. The climb is steady rather than rushed, with plenty of time to pause, breathe and take in the scenery.
At the top there’ll be time for a lunch break, with toilets and the option of a café stop before we continue past the rare breeds farm and on towards the striking ruins of Hadleigh Castle itself. Sitting high above the Thames Estuary, the castle offers panoramic views across the water and a sense of real openness and space.
The return route is largely downhill, giving us time to enjoy the changing light, estuary views and good company as we make our way back towards Leigh.
This is a friendly, supportive group walk at a sociable pace — ideal for people who enjoy exploring new places without the stress of planning routes or walking alone.
