On Thursday, December 5, for one day only, Gale is partnering with Loyola University Chicago at their Loyola Information Commons on the Lake Shore Campus for a fun, free, team-based DH workshop! Whether you have prior experience with DH or are eager to learn, we’re putting you front and center the latest DH methods. A fortunate few will win big prizes, and everyone will gain valuable skills. A travel stipend of $100 USD will be provided to all participants.
- Designed for all digital humanities experience levels—and for all humanities and social science researchers and librarians
- Keynote: Dr. Catherine Nichols, senior lecturer and director of the May Weber Ethnographic Study Collection at Loyola University
- Connect, collaborate, skill up—and win!
Ready to register? Go here: gale.com/hackinghistory (You must sign up here in order to attend.) Want to learn more? Read on!
How It Works:
Tailored to you: Identify your preferred comfort level with DH at preregistration below, and you’ll be randomly assigned to a team of coresearchers at the event.
1. Team formation: On the day of the workshop, each team will select a research topic from a predetermined list.
2. Ready, set, research: Teams will spend the day working together to mine primary sources texts, build content sets, and generate analyses of their findings within Gale Digital Scholar Lab, guided by expert facilitators.
3. And the winner is: With research projects complete, each team will briefly defend their project to expert judges to win prizes!

What You Could Win:
Each member of the winning team will win:
- A prepaid gift card equivalent to $250 USD
- One year of access to Gale Digital Scholar Lab for their institutional library
- One year of access to the winner’s choice of a Gale Primary Sources archive for their institutional library

What You’ll Gain:
Relatively new to DH?
- Gain experience with DH methods in a hands-on, expertly guided, collaborative, low-pressure atmosphere.
- Develop your skills with digital methodologies at the forefront of research and instruction.
- Break down barriers to teaching with DH—and solidify your pedagogical knowledge.

Already comfortable using DH methods?
- Learn from each other—and accelerate teaching and learning as well as your own research skills—in a hands-on environment.
- Gain insights and ideas to share across your institution's humanities and social science research community.
- Make new connections, spark new ideas—and get a download of the datasets your team created.

What to Know:
Registration on our form is required in order to attend the workshop. This is a free, all-day event hosted in collaboration with Gale and Loyola University Chicago, University Libraries. Registered attendees are cordially invited to attend an optional networking reception following the workshop.
Breakfast, lunch, complimentary parking, high-speed Wi-Fi, and a $100 USD travel stipend will be provided.
