Gẹlẹdẹ Queens ZINE READING, Short Film Screening and Artist Talk

Gẹlẹdẹ Queens: Where the Mothers Speak is a reflective artist-led session centering an original art zine by multidisciplinary artist Destinie Adélakun. The program explores themes of matriarchal power, ancestral memory, and diasporic return, presented through a combination of short film, zine reading, and guided discussion.This offering is rooted in artistic scholarship, spiritual storytelling, and cultural sovereignty. It is not a hands-on workshop but a structured presentation and dialogue grounded in visual art, film, and text.

The event will include:
(i) A short film screening from the Gẹlẹdẹ Queens series(ii) A live reading from selected passages of the zine(iii) An open Q&A and collective reflection(iiii) This is a quiet, intentional session best suited for adults and mature teens (16+)

About the Artist:

Destinie Adélakun is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker celebrating the wisdom, resilience, and beauty of the African and Caribbean diaspora. Of Nigerian and Indian heritage, her work spans photography, film, textiles, and sculpture, exploring matriarchal rule, mythology, and spiritual reclamation. Her art has been featured at the Brooklyn Museum, SECCA, and Toronto History Museums. Currently an artist-in-residence at the Andrew Freedman House, she uses film to amplify diasporic voices, earning honors like the Canadian Women Artist of the Year Award and the Breakthrough Artist Award.
