GYPSY JAZZ: Charles Blandin

Charles Blandin is a specialist in gipsy jazz based in Brittany, France. Having performed in Rennes, Paris and other major French cities as well as in a variety of jazz festivals across France, Charles is now headed to London in anticipation of his upcoming solo repertoire.

Raised on Gipsy and American Jazz, Charles Blandin has developed a unique solo repertoire on seven-string guitar. In his work, he effortlessly blends his influences : jazz, from Bill Evans to Django, Debussy’s classical timbres, as well as multiple modes and rhythms. His compositions explore the richness of harmonies, timbres, and colours specific to his tuning in “major thirds”.

In concert, his compositions leave room for improvisation in reaction to each space and audience. He has collaborated with artists from other fields such as photography, film, and theatre. As a sideman, his collaborations have led him to perform in countless festivals in France, such as No Border, Couleurs du Monde, Festival Interceltique, Yaouank…
