Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish (gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing"). It dates back to the mid-1800's, and was first used by Japanese fisherman who wanted to make a record of the size and species of fish they caught for display at market. It is also rumored that Samurai would settle fishing competitions using gyotaku prints. Eventually, the purpose of gyotaku changed from being a practical means of recording one's catches to a cherished art form.
