See what's NEXT22 and join Laya Reddy in her Senior Trumpet Recital Unsung but Instrumental: Black Women Across Genres.
While Black women are commonly recognized for their contributions to the blues, their role in other genres - especially classical music - is often ignored. They have been instrumental to the foundation and development of both genres, innovatively using their music to express messages about their race and gender. In a tribute to these inspiring musicians, this recital is made up entirely of pieces composed or originally recorded by Black women. The combination of blues and classical music is intended to foster a connection between two genres with seemingly divergent histories.

Introduction and Dance by Undine Smith Moore (1904-1989)
Adoration by Florence Price (1887-1953)
Call to Peace by Mary D. Watkins (b. 1939)
Hound Dog recorded by Big Mama Thornton (1926-1984)
See See Rider recorded by Ma Rainey (1886-1939)
Backwater Blues recorded by Bessie Smith (1894-1937)
Laya Reddy is a senior at The George Washington University, majoring in Political Science and Music and minoring in Africana Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
