The glory of risk, the thrill of the game. Different lanes and different lives fill the bowling alley. But is everybody playing the same game?
In a family-friendly interactive dance work on the dignity of risk-taking, Adelaide’s award-winning company Restless Dance Theatre explores the power of making your own mistakes. Performed in a real-life bowling alley, Guttered mirrors society’s obsession with winning and losing and the ways people living with disability are often over-protected to soften the blows of failure.
Tales of hazards hidden and independence lost are explored in emotionally vivid choreography you’re right amongst. Bowling bags breathe stories and bodies break free and hurl themselves down the lanes in this evocative exploration of life beyond a safety net.
Directed by Michelle Ryan, artistic director of Restless Dance Theatre and recipient of the 2020 Australia Council Dance Award, Guttered is designed by Meg Wilson, with lighting by Geoff Cobham and a soundscape by Jason Sweeney.
