At long last, after much anticipation, we are finally going to screen Harmony Korine's gonzo 1997 directorial debut GUMMO.Initially delayed until the new Criterion Collection 4K restoration was made available to us, we are now very happy to say that we'll be screening GUMMO at the Camelot Arts Club cinema!
An ensemble collection of interconnected vignettes about trailer trash and poverty-line (often adolescent) residents of the tornado-ravaged small town of Xenia, Ohio, GUMMO is writer-director-provocateur Harmony Korine's incredibly unique and deeply disturbing yet often funny debut as a director.
Coming two years after he wrote Larry Clark's KIDS, GUMMO flies in the face of cinema of the time, and still feels radical today. This film is a personal statement, and it could only have come from one mind - HARMONY KORINE. And no film would match its gonzo weirdness until Harmony Korine himself returned with another film.
Misunderstood and derided in 1997 but appreciated as a masterpiece in the present day, GUMMO, in spite of its overtly Dogme-influenced rough edges and repugnant imagery, is a strangely lyrical and poetic work of cinema with a certain kind of unknowable alchemical artistry that unifies the entire work. GUMMO is a truly hypnotic cinematic 'experience' that must be seen to be believed.
