In the early 1970s, Mullen toured and recorded with Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express (three albums) before moving on to Kokomo and an international stint with the Average White Band . Mid‑70s saw him partner with tenor saxophonist Dick Morrissey to co‑lead the jazz‑funk outfit Morrissey–Mullen, releasing seven albums—including Up (1977), Cape Wrath (1979) and It’s About Time (1983)—and becoming a cornerstone of Britain’s 1980s jazz‑fusion scene .
Post‑Morrissey–Mullen, Jim forged a solo career with acclaimed albums like Rule of Thumb (1996), jimjam (2000, featuring Hamish Stuart and Pino Palladino), and Volunteers (2019) . As a sought‑after sideman, he’s recorded with Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith, Terry Callier, Claire Martin, Georgie Fame and Jimmy Witherspoon .
Winner of multiple “Best Guitar” awards at the British Telecom Jazz Awards (1994, 1996, 2000), Post Office Jazz Awards (2000) and British Jazz Awards (2002, 2013–2018) , Mullen remains an influential presence on jazz stages worldwide, celebrated for his warm tone, lyrical improvisations, and enduring legacy.
