Guitar League 12/13/25!

Saint Petersburg Library West Community Library at 6700 8th Avenue North, Saint Petersburg – sign in at 1:00pm. We have had to reschedule the December meeting from the 1st to the 13th and move to the library as a temporary location while the American Legion undergoes repairs. Big Jim Allen will teach in the second half and we will run a combination “open mic” and workshop format for the first half.

Guitar League (GL) is an educational organization and community of guitarists of all skill levels sharing music knowledge, techniques and fun. There are many GL Chapters located around the U.S. used as musical clubs that meet once a month, guitar jam, and listen to professional presentations. So, bring your guitar and be prepared to learn, play, and have fun!

First half playing guitar:

We will start the meeting with open mic. Sign up sheet will be at the check-in table. Here are also a couple of songs that I will project the words and chords to that you can play along with:

1. Desperado – Eagles- capo 3rd fret, play in Key of G

2. Guitar Man – Bread – capo 3rd fret, play in Key of E

About our presenter:

Big Jim Allen, a Chicago native now living in the Tampa Bay area since 2005, grew up playing acoustic folk rock, jazz and classic rock music…from the British Invasion to electric folk rock and “hippie rock”, to the California singer/songwriter music. With reviews that refer to him as an “all-around entertainer and personality”, Big Jim is best known as a fingerstyle guitarist, versatile multi-instrumentalist, and a singer/songwriter…all with a touch of humor. He’s also performed and conducted seminars in at festivals and events for a number of years.

To the Guitar League, Big Jim will bring to you an informative and immediately usable set of skills for your live guitar performances. He won’t teach you play the guitar… He will offer insights on how you can improve the overall sound when you have an ensemble of multiple guitars playing the same chords - Utilizing the benefits of “Nashville Number System” for transposing keys and chords on the fly - The “Amazing Cowboy D Chord”…and using its many variations for chord melody arranging. Amaze your friends with this simple idea. Big Jim will be not only performing pieces, but will incorporate this portion to demonstrate how this all works. Bring your capo, your tuner, a pencil and pad of paper to take “Notes about Notes”.

The Guitar League generally meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:30 PM to 9 PM (sign in & registration at 6:30) at the American Legion Post 125 on 5th Avenue South.

At most meetings, the main presenter spends the first 50 minutes sharing a mixture of performing and discussing their craft, something truly unique in the entertainment industry. Next, we take a 20-minute break and the 2nd half is your chance to play your guitar along with the presenter and the rest of the club. Attendees are encouraged to bring their acoustic guitar, capo and tuner if they have one.

A prospective member’s first meeting is always free to test-drive the organization. Membership is $120/year for 12 monthly meetings or $10 per month at the door. Membership includes access to a huge curated library of free online lessons from guitar instruction industry leader Truefire and deep discounts on their All-Access plan. The Saint Petersburg chapter of Guitar League is the ninth chapter of the Syracuse, NY based organization.
