The murder of Nightwatchman Matthew Wilson at the corner of Union & Main Streets, Cobleskill at around 2am on November 27, 1900 is a compelling tale of heroism, tragedy, and justice. The tour begins with the discovery of Wilson’s body after a hail of gunfire. What follows is the reconstruction of events that led to his fatal encounter with a notorious gang of safe-crackers known as “Yegg-men.” Throughout the tour, the story of Wilson’s life and family and descriptions of Cobleskill’s turn-of-the-20th-century business district are woven together in a vivid narrative. This glimpse into the world in which he lived not only honors the fallen police officer, but describes the tragic toll on his family and community. There is also an investigative element of the crime itself. The evidence presented at trial, the backgrounds of the perpetrators, the Pinkerton Detective Agency’s manhunt for them, and their ultimate date with justice, is explored. Based on research for Jeff's coming book on Wilson's murder - Faithful Unto Death. Tour meets at the Public Parking Lot at the corner of Union & Main (use Mart Cleaners of Cobleskill 104 Union St. Cobleskill for GPS). It's Free!
