This summer, the Described Toronto Collective, (Christine Malec, Rebecca Singh and Katherine Sanders,) is collaborating to tell the story of Walter Saunders Memorial Park near Dufferin and Eglinton. On Saturday, September 21 @ 2pm, please join us for a guided walk in the park and garden, with live audio description and touch tour. This guided walk is intended for the Blind and partially sighted community but anyone is welcome to join. The walk will also include ASL Interpretation.
Audio Describer Rebecca Singh will be walking and talking our way through this urban park, including the beautiful pollinator garden and the lush community vegetable beds. We’ll get descriptions of some of the urban park basics that, for many people in the blind community, are things to navigate or bypass without often hearing descriptions of: a basketball court, splashpad, and folk doing what folk do in an urban park. The Hopewell Community Garden is the main feature of this walk, and we’ll be highlighting descriptions of native plants, cultivated vegetables, and the insect pollinators which the garden has been so successful at attracting. There will be opportunities to touch and smell growing things, and ask questions.
It’s not a huge park so there won't be far to walk. The park is a thin rectangle the length of two and a half city blocks and we will roughly walk the perimeter of it on paved sidewalk as well as checking out the Hopewell Community Garden. The sidewalk leading to the garden from the main park entrance is wheelchair accessible. Sighted guides will be available to assist.
The address, 426 Hopewell Avenue, will get you to the main entrance of the park, located on the south side of the park at the intersection of Hopewell Avenue and Jimmy Wisdom Way. The garden is just east of there, past the basketball courts.
When you arrive, if a guide does not find you immediately, you can phone or text Katie at 647-654-1084 and someone will be dispatched.
For questions or to register for the walk, contact Christine Malec at [email protected].
