About this Event

You’re warmly invited to visit a Staten Island gem – a 1964 synagogue designed by the renowned, prolific 20thcentury synagogue architect, Percival Goodman, FAIA.

Temple Israel Reform Congregation of Staten Island exemplifies Goodman’s approach. Inside you will see exposed construction materials: concrete block walls, massive innovative glue-laminated wood beams, and structural cedar wood plank ceilings. Influenced by Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel, Goodman pierced the walls with irregularly placed windows and set narrow bands of glass to separate the walls from the ceiling creating the effect of a floating roof.

The site provides a respite on a commercial street – it’s picturesque as well as challenged with a brook that had to be re-routed to accommodate the building.

Meet the congregation’s president and other leaders for a guided tour and enjoy light refreshments on Saturday, May 18, 4:00 – 6:00 pm.
