Guided Hike & Fossil Hunt

Join local paleontologist Dr. Rebecca McKean to search for (and find!) fossils at Wequiock Falls County Park. Learn about the unique geology which formed this part of the Ledge - a story that began over 400 million years ago – and visualize Wisconsin as the tropical paradise it once was. You’ll learn about how two distinct units of rock formed, from the blue-green shale at the bottom of the ravine to the tan dolomite that makes up the top edge of the waterfall. Finally, we’ll take a journey downstream to an outcrop to begin searching for fossils that were part of an ancient reef system. Possible fossils to discover include brachiopods, crinoids, bryozoans, and rare horn corals. Have your finds identified by Dr. McKean! Kids 8 and up welcome!

This fundraising tour is priced at $15.00 for adults and only $5.00 for children 15 and under. Proceeds support the WI-Ledge Educational Signage Program. Meet in the south parking lot off VanLaanen Road beginning at 9:45 a.m. for a prompt 10:00 a.m. start. The tour will last approximately 2 hours with a planned route requiring sure footing and involves a short hike down the stairs into the ravine, followed by a trip through the tunnel and along the riverbed. Please bring a flashlight/phone or headlamp and dress appropriately for the weather. Rain boots or shoes that can get wet are recommended!
